Crystals, Gemstones, and Tarot Cards

I found the section on crystals, gemstones, protective objects, and amulets particularly captivating and relevant to my life and friendships. Despite their ubiquitous presence in our society, I had never associated crystals with witchcraft until this course. One individual who has deeply influenced my understanding of these objects is my long-time friend Bryn, whom I've known since elementary school. Bryn has developed a profound fascination with crystals and tarot cards over the years, amassing a collection from various sources around the world, including trade shows and antique shops. She has even created a crystal altar in her home, which she considers a sacred space filled with her cherished crystals and spiritual tools. For Bryn, this altar is a source of peace, tranquility, and mental clarity. Just like A History of Magic: Witchcraft, and the Occult states, “People have been attracted by the beauty of gemstones and crystals since the very earliest times and imbued them with the powers of magic and healing (DK, 106).

Bryn's belief in the power of crystals is unwavering. She believes that these crystals interact with her body's energy field, promoting balance and alignment. While she doesn't adhere to a specific religion, she is deeply spiritual and sees these crystals as conduits for higher spiritual energies. This made me reflect on our class discussions regarding religion versus magic—can one believe in one without the other? Are they mutually exclusive? Bryn's spiritual beliefs demonstrate that one can find meaning and power outside traditional religious frameworks.

During a visit this semester, Bryn offered me a tarot card reading, where I selected three cards that she interpreted using her book, The Big Book of Tarot by Joan Bunning. It was fascinating to see these concepts come to life and relate them back to our class readings, particularly the idea that tarot cards can represent our past, present, and future selves.

Whether these objects possess inherent healing powers or not, I believe that their true power lies in the belief and hope they inspire. Much like religion, the strength of these practices comes from the faith and conviction of those who believe in them.
