A Modern-Day Witch
Our classroom discussions regarding modern-day witchcraft encouraged me to delve further into the current lived experiences of individuals who embrace witchcraft wholeheartedly. I wanted to learn more about the thought-processes of these individuals and what led them to Wicca, hoping to gain deeper insights into their journeys and motivations.
One NPR article, written by Mallory Yu, stuck out to me: “'I was tired of God being dead': How one woman was drawn to witchcraft"
A summary is as follows: Diana Helmuth's journey into modern witchcraft, documented in her book "The Witching Year: A Memoir of Earnest Fumbling Through Modern Witchcraft," reflects a significant evolution from skepticism to personal discovery. Growing up in Oakland, California, Helmuth initially encountered witchcraft through a friend who practiced Wicca. However, as someone shaped by a philosophy that valued intelligence through atheism, she initially viewed spirituality with skepticism. This changed during the COVID lockdowns, prompting her to dive deeper into the occult, consulting primary sources and engaging with experienced practitioners.
Helmuth's exploration began with Wicca and despite its structure, she found that witchcraft as a broader practice offered more flexibility and diversity. Through her journey, Helmuth not only learned about rituals, spells, and the interconnectedness of the universe but also confronted her own beliefs and preconceptions about spirituality.
One of the key moments in her journey was when she attempted to connect with a goddess, a central figure in many forms of witchcraft. This experience, despite initial hesitation and fear of feeling foolish, led her to an immense sense of connection and acceptance. It was a turning point that challenged her self-doubt and allowed her to embrace a spirituality that resonated with her on a personal level.
I greatly enjoyed learning more about Helmuth’s story as it specifically ties to our class discussion regarding modern day witchcraft and practices. However, her story describes more than just the exploration of witchcraft; it navigates the complexities of identity, belief, and the quest for significance in our ever-changing world—a journey many face daily. Through sharing her experiences and wisdom, Helmuth seeks to explain witchcraft, break down stereotypes, and encourage others to initiate their personal journeys of self-discovery and spiritual exploration.
Although often thought of as ludicrous, Helmuth’s portrayal of witchcraft is presented in a way that makes it easier to understand why she supports it. Moreover, this serves as a reminder for me to approach others' choices with respect, refraining from judgment and instead, embracing their viewpoints and thought processes.
