Class Witch Trial and Final Reflection
Reflecting on the witch trial class period from my perspective as one of the judges alongside Ella and Kyla, I must say it was a truly unique and memorable experience. I am proud of how seriously our class took the witch trial, shown by the historical accuracy of each part played and the emotion and intensity behind each interaction. Specifically, one aspect that really stood out to me was watching the afflicted accusers, Lanie, Lexie, and Alyssa, fully immerse themselves in their roles. Their screaming, crying, and dramatized movements were both funny and terrifying at the same time.
On one hand, their dedication to getting into character added a layer of authenticity and entertainment to the trial. It was almost like watching a scene from a historical portrayal of the witch trials unfold before our eyes. However, in their "craziness," it was a stark reminder of the hysteria and madness that characterized the Salem witch trials. The way they embodied the fear, paranoia, and desperation of the afflicted during that dark period in history was immensely impactful. Although it was almost silly to be acting so erratic and nonsensical, back in the 1690s, the accused girls really did display the same amount of grit, theatrics, and meaningless dialogue. In contrast to our harmless class role play, the real Salem witch trials involved people’s reputations and lives on the line.
It was both amusing and chilling to see how easily people could be swayed by fear and how quickly accusations could spiral out of control, like when Colleen accused Brianna, and subsequently Brianna then accused Quinn. Their performances, while exaggerated for the sake of the activity, truly represented the chaos and injustice that occurred during the Salem witch trials. It made me reflect on the power of mass hysteria and the dangers of prejudice and misinformation in society. The interruptions of screaming and stories by the afflicted accusers and witnesses truly mirrored the inconsistent and unfair nature of the trials, where the public would oftentimes take over in a frenzy.
Overall, while the theatrical aspect added a touch of humor to the experience, it also served as a sobering reminder of the real-life consequences of unchecked fear and prejudice. It was a valuable lesson in understanding historical events from a more empathetic and critical perspective.
Reflecting on my experience this semester, it struck me how detrimental it can be to remain entrenched in one's own beliefs without considering alternative viewpoints, whether it be in differing religions, ethnicities, socioeconomic status, and more. There is richness and depth that come from embracing diverse perspectives and fostering personal growth to gain a deeper understanding of the world around us. The vital role of broadening our horizons, not just in academic pursuits but also in life, fosters empathy, enhances sound thinking, and enables us as humans to navigate complexities with a more informed and open-minded approach. Thank you, Professor Williams, for everything! It has been an absolute joy to be in your classroom this past year, and I will cherish these experiences as I embark on this next stage of life.
